If you’re expecting—first, congratulations 🤍 And second, you’re probably wondering: when should I actually book my newborn session?
This is one of the most common questions I get as a newborn photographer serving Torrance and the South Bay area, and the timing matters more than most parents realize.
The ideal time to photograph your baby is within the first 5–16 days after birth.
During this stage, babies are:
Sleepier
Naturally curled
Easier to gently pose
More comfortable being settled into those soft, cozy positions
After about the two-week mark, babies begin to stretch out more, stay awake longer, and become more aware of their surroundings—which can make sessions less predictable, especially if you’re hoping for those peaceful, sleepy images.
That doesn’t mean it’s “too late” after that window—but it does change the flow and style of the session.
In those first few weeks, your baby changes quickly.
Around the two-week mark, many babies go through their first growth spurt. They may:
Wake more easily
Want to feed more often
Be harder to settle into deep sleep
For newborn photography, a calm, sleepy baby allows for a smoother, more relaxed session experience.
That’s why planning ahead makes such a difference—not just for the images, but for how the entire session feels for you as a parent.
How far in advance should i book a newborn session in Torrance?
The best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second trimester.
Here’s how it works:
We reserve your due date on the calendar
Once baby arrives, you reach out
We schedule your session within that ideal 5–16 day window
This approach keeps everything flexible while still ensuring availability.
If you wait until after your baby is born, there’s a chance your preferred photographer may already be fully booked—especially during busy seasons here in the South Bay area.
What if my baby is already here?
Reach out anyway.
I always recommend checking availability, even if your baby has already arrived. While the ideal window is early on, beautiful and meaningful images can still be created at any stage.
The most important thing is capturing your baby—exactly as they are right now.
Newborn sessions are designed to feel slow, calm, and fully guided.
Whether your session takes place in my Torrance studio or in the comfort of your home, everything is prepared for you—from gentle posing to a relaxed pace that allows time for feeding, soothing, and breaks as needed.
You don’t need to worry about what to do or how your baby will behave. That’s all part of the process.
If you’re expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Torrance, the South Bay, or the greater Los Angeles area, I recommend reaching out during your second trimester to reserve your due date.
From there, I’ll guide you through everything so the experience feels simple, supported, and completely stress-free.
