There’s something timeless about a newborn portrait that blends softness, artistry, and storytelling. For my client's session, I wanted to go beyond the traditional — and create a celestial, magical feel that truly celebrated her arrival. This post gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how we designed her dreamy composite image and why this session was so special.

From the moment her mama booked, we knew we wanted something soft and feminine, with a sense of wonder. Baby's nursery had a theme, clouds, stars, everything in the sky. We chose a blush pink palette with delicate textures and added an enchanting starry background to enhance the “chin on hands” pose — a classic that beautifully showcases a baby’s peaceful expression and tiny features.

Sweet newborn baby girl, sleeping with her chin on her arms, wearing a light pink floral headband, a pink backdrop and pink outfit.

This sweet baby girl was posed on our cozy beanbag top, asleep in soft fabrics with tulle accents. We used the Profoto B10X Plus with a large diffuser to create gentle, natural-looking light which is ideal for newborn skin. The starry background below, was digitally added in post, creating a composite image that blends realism with fantasy.

Newborn safety is always my top priority. This pose was photographed safely with support and later refined during editing. Composites allow us to achieve dreamy effects without compromising comfort or safety — and they result in unique artwork that families treasure forever. Below you can see how the top images were fused together to form a new image with the desired effects, dreamy stars and clouds to go along with the theme of her nursery.

The baby's mom and dad chose a soft pink headband with floral accents, which became the perfect focal point to tie the whole scene together. Details like these — chosen by the parents or curated from my studio wardrobe — help personalize every session.

I offer custom newborn sessions in the Torrance and South Bay area, with a full collection of backdrops, wardrobe, and styling options. If you're expecting, the best time to book is in your second trimester — so we can plan something magical and meaningful, just like this.
