Planning a maternity session is exciting—but figuring out what to wear underneath your gown? That’s the part no one talks about. As a South Bay maternity photographer, I want you to feel confident, comfortable, and fully supported (in every sense!) during your photoshoot.

Whether you’re wearing something sheer, fitted, or flowy, the right undergarments make all the difference.

Stick to seamless, nude-toned underwear that matches your skin tone. This prevents lines or colors from showing through, especially if your gown is light, sheer, or tight-fitting.

Wearing a strapless, backless, or off-the-shoulder dress? Plan ahead:

  • Strapless or bandeau bras are great for structured dresses.

  • Adhesive bras or silicone covers work for low-back or sheer gowns.

  • Nursing bras with removable straps can work if you need function + comfort.

If you feel more confident in maternity shapewear or smoothing shorts, go for it. Just make sure it’s comfortable when sitting, walking, and posing.

But don’t stress—your body is beautiful as it is, and the right poses and lighting will flatter you without discomfort.

Do a full try-on a few days before your session—dress, bra, underwear, and even accessories. Walk around in it. Sit in it. Take a mirror selfie. This gives you time to adjust or swap anything that feels off.

Many of my clients wear one of the studio gowns I provide, and I’ll always help you choose the right undergarments to go with your look. If you're bringing your own dress, I’ll guide you on what works best underneath based on the fit and fabric.

Feeling comfortable and supported lets your natural glow come through—and the right undergarments are a simple but powerful part of that.
